DIY Steel Building Kits

If you want metal buildings, whether as DIY kits or ready completed then you have an impressive choice, as evidenced by the immense number of such buildings that can be seen all over the country.
Most DIY metal building kits are designed to be assembled with just a few basic hand tools. These are not buildings using RSJs or anything like it.
Many handymen have used their DIY skills to assemble metal building kits for car ports, garages and similar buildings in their own yards.
When you buy a DIY metal building kit you usually buy the framework that supports your building and choose your cladding and roofing materials separately.
When you apply for a planning permit you will need to show details of the anchorage points that will be used. Everything you need is supplied in the kit; from thickness and specification of the concrete base to the guage of steel used in the frame. These steel buildings will outlast the rest of your home, they are that sturdy.
Many people buy DIY metal building kits and then employ contractors to assemble them. This makes sense if the building is a large one and would need a crane to lift the frame pieces into place. These are the steel barn-type structures you will see going up on farms.
You can specify a metal-framed building for your home, too, rather than a conventional timber-framed one. It will last longer, with lower maintenance problems.
DIY metal building kits for storage buildings and workshops are where most people start in this field. You can build a steel canopy for your RV, with supports only on one side, a sun canopy over your deck or any one of a multitude of other applications. Steel is stronger than the equivalent timber structure, so needs no pillars or supports half way across a wide building.
Prices for metal building kits compare well with timber alternatives once you take the much longer life into account. Steel structures will last without maintenance for fifty years. Timber structures will fall down in twenty years, no matter how much time and money you spend on paint and wood preservative.
You will need to pay careful attention to insulating your steel building. Steel will rust if it is exposed to air and water. Condensation will form on uninsulated steel and begin the rusting process wherever there are tiny scratches in the paint, just like in a car. Spraying foam insulation onto the steel frame prevents condensation collecting on it, preventing any rust.
You also need to pay attention to insulating any cladding materials you use. If you use steel sheets as cladding then you will need to have them sprayed with foam insulation to prevent condensation and rust. You will probably need extra insulation inside the cladding to prevent the building overheating in summer or becoming too cold in the winter.
All this insulation will also make your building a quieter place to work in. It stops sounds being transmitted into the building from outside. It also reduces noise from inside annoying people outside. Lastly, the insulation you install will prevent your steel building acting like an echo chamber.
